A new Newport-based community theatre company is celebrating the success of its first intake of young acting students.
Six students started studying with Moonstruck Astronaut, founded by former drama teacher Hannah de Quincey, in September.
The six-month course saw students build their confidence in verbal, physical and ensemble acting skills alongside enhancing their creativity and teamwork.
The hard work of the students has been rewarded after they received distinctions in acting by the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts (LAMDA).
Four students aged 10 to 12 performed the opening of ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ during their exam whilst older students performed two contrasting duologues.
Mrs de Quincey, from Sutton, who gave up her job at Concord College last year to pursue her long-held dream of running children’s theatre company, said she was absolutely delighted with the students’ recent achievements.
She said: “I’m literally over the moon examiners from LAMDA have recognised the hard work and commitment of all our students. They have each given up a lot of time to rehearse and it’s not always easy stepping out of your comfort zone especially in front of an audience.
“When I opened the envelope, I felt an enormous sense of pride. The examiner commented on their ‘excellent’ and ‘imaginative’ use of space ‘throughout the entire performance’ and that ‘group timing was faultless’.
“This is a really big first step forward for the theatre company. We will be continuing to work with these students and will also be looking forward to recruiting more in September.
“We are also very excited to be launching our first week-long drama camp in the school summer holidays for children aged 8 to 11-years-old.”
The camp, which will run at 2-4.30pm from July 30 to August 3, at Trinity Church in Newport, will give youngsters the opportunity to develop their performing and acting skills in a fun and engaging environment. The week will culminate in a short performance to parents.
Moonstruck Astronaut is a Community Interest Company and was formed from Mrs. de Quincey’s passion for uniting communities through creativity and arts projects.
